What Does an Interior Designer Actually Do?

When people think of interior design, they often picture someone turning up with a bag of paint charts, fabric samples, and wallpaper swatches. Although part of the job is creating beautiful, cohesive spaces, the truth is, interior design starts long before we get to the pretty bits.

A good designer likes to be involved right at the beginning, ideally before building work even starts. Why? Because we can make decisions early on that have a big impact on how the space will look, feel, and function. Take layouts, for example. We help plan these to make sure the flow of a room works for your daily life. From those layouts, we can tell your electrician exactly where plug sockets and lighting cables should go, not just where it is convenient for them to install, but where it actually makes sense for how you will use the space. We can even work with architects and builders to move doors or windows if it will make a significant difference to how the space functions and walls can be built or removed to improve the layout. All of this happens before you have even looked at a paint chart. When it is time to choose the finishes like flooring, lighting, furniture, colours, and textures, we are there to guide you through it all.

Of course, some projects don't require architects plans and building work and you are working with a space you already have. Whether you just need a one-off consultation to get advice and feel confident moving forward on your own, or you want full support from start to finish, we can tailor the service to suit your needs.

Some clients want help with a single room and others want full home design. We also create 3D visuals, so you can see exactly what your space will look like before committing to any big decisions. That way, you can move forward knowing you are making the right choices.

Interior design is about much more than surface beauty. It is about creating a home that works for you practically, emotionally, and visually. Whether you need help reimagining a layout, finding the right tradespeople, or pulling everything together into a finished scheme, a designer can make the whole process smoother, more enjoyable, and far less stressful.
